What are Small Groups? We at Clarkston United Methodist Church are invited to weave our lives together, to faithfully connect with each other in meaningful ways. Small groups constitute a very important path to such connection within our large congregation.
Sunday Adult Classes: Parent’s Circle: Meets weekely in the Board Conference Room, upstairs. Contact Rob Gilkerson at rgilkerson@clarkstonumc.org or 248-620-8402 for more information. Sunday Couple’s Bible Study Meets bi-weekly in the Parlor. Studies have varied depending on the group’s interest. Thursday Night Men’s Bible Study: 6:30-7:30pm in the Library.Contact Jeff Smolek at jsmolek@sbcglobal.net or Dave Kanous at david.m.kanous@gm.com. Spiritual Writing Group: This group will meet in a non-threatening spiritual writing environment. (Relax! This workshop will bear no resemblance to the severe structured writing classes many of us remember.) In an effort to deepen our spiritual life we will receive invitations to write through prompts and starters, share our writing with compassionate listeners, and learn to refine our writing for a wider audience. Task Based Small Groups: Knitting from the Heart This group meets 1-3pm on Mondays in the church parlor. Knits baby caps for infants, children’s sweaters, hats and prayer shawls. The Monday Knitters sponsor a Mitten/Scarf/Hat tree during Advent. Donations to St. Joseph Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Alice Gustafson Center, Haven, Lighthouse, and shawls are given to congregation and community members.
Mercy Threads sends handmade, cheerful hospital gowns and cover-me-with-love quilts for distribution to deserving children throughout the world.
Grace Center of Hope in Pontiac, MI. CUMC is responsible for preparing and serving dinner to clients at Grace Center. We gather at CUMC at 4:30pm and usually return by 7pm. 6-8 persons needed—come once in a while or be a regular.
Helping Hands For ESTHERS Children helping one child at a time from the streets of Brazil by providing speakers, collects items and coordinates fundraisers to support ESTHERS House.
Usher and Greeter Teams provide hospitality on Sunday mornings. If you would like to usher at 9 or 11:15am. Contact Bob Wyatt at rwyatt05@juno.com. Music Ministry provides opportunities for sharing of gifts as well as connecting with others in the community of faith. Learn more about the Music Ministry. Adult Book Club meets on the 4th Monday of the month from 7:30-9:00. The group chooses one book a month to read and discuss.
Age/Stage Based Small Groups: Parent’s Circle - More than a Sunday morning study! Organizes monthly babysitting co-op, and separate family and adult events. Contact Rob or Carrie Gilkerson at carriegilkerson@yahoo.com. Beyond High School – maintains a church connection with our youth who have graduated from high school and have launched into the world – whether that is college, the military, or a combination of work and further education. The group sends newsletters, care package, and cards.
United Methodist Men invites all men and encourages them to attend regularly scheduled fellowship opportunities. Meetings feature an interesting speaker along with breakfast at 8am in Fellowship Hall on the 3rd Sunday of the month Sept-May.
United Methodist Women Circles— Every CUMC woman is a member of the UMW and is encouraged to attend. Circle meetings include devotions, prayer, fellowship, guest speakers, and mission projects. Plus, we have a lot of fun!
Over 50 Group meets the third Friday of the month at noon in the church parlor from Sept-June. Bring a dish to pass and treat yourself to a delicious.
Angels in Training is a group of children ages 4-year-olds to 5th grade who meet every Sunday at 10:10am from Sept through April to do projects for others in our community and our world. All children are welcome to attend one time or every session.
Youth Groups: FUEL is a group of 6th and 7th grade students who meet weekly on Sundays from 5-6pm Sept-May. This groupprovides a mix of social and spiritual fun to help youth connect to friends and to God. There are lots of events, trips, service opportunities, and a winter retreat.
Club 89 is a group of 8th and 9th grade students who meet weekly on Sundays from 7-8pm Sept-May. This group provides a mix of social and spiritual fun to help youth connect to friends and to God. There are lots of events, trips, service opportunities, and a winter retreat.
(SNL) Sunday Night Live is a group of 10th through 12th grade students who meet weekly on Sundays from 7-8pm Sept.- May. This group provides a mix of social and spiritual fun to help youth connect to friends and to God. There are lots of events, trips, service opportunities, and a winter retreat.
Righteous Mission, for students in 9th through 12th grades, is a week-long youth service camp where young adults live the faith of Christian community by helping those in need.
College Righteous Mission, for young adults college age (19-25) is a week long, service based trip that allows participants to help those is need through service projects, biblical programs, and a chance to reconnect with friends and with God. Small group Bible studies, held in member’shomes, offer a time of spiritual growth and exploration as well as providing a Christian community.
Interest Based Small Groups: CUMC Golf League at Heather Highlands Golf Course; all abilities welcome. Season is XXXXX
Men’s Softball League: Open to all Men high school to 100. The season is from May-August.
Depot Theatre Night group – attends plays at the Depot Theater. Often there are tickets available when season ticket holders can’t make a performance.
Euchre Group – meets usually once a month – Couples and singles are welcome – if you get on the list, you will be notified of the next playing date via email.
Round Robin Dinners – 4 casual dinners you attend with usually 6 different people. Couples and singles are welcome to participate. Dinners are held in October 24, November 21, January 23 and February 20. You need not have to attend all 4 dinners – a sub list is maintained. The next sign up time will be September, 2009, but if you would like to be on the list for next year or would like more information.
Dining Out- several dining out groups have formed out of faith based groups. Contacts will help you organize a dining out group that fits your lifestyle!
Walking Group- meets at the church on Tuesdays at 5:30pm.
Running Group: Meets regularly on Saturday mornings at various locations. Contact Annette Siminski at 248-620-8407 for additional information.
