Sleeping Bags for the Homeless
For the last seven years, Clarkston United Methodist Church has been coming to Father Blasko’s North End soup kitchen in November. It started with sleeping bags…bringing sleeping bags to make the winter a little bit better for the homeless. Sleeping bags are still part of the program. Eighty were handed out in 2010, but how this mission has grown! McDonald’s gift cards, personal hygiene bags for kids & adults, blankets, sheets, winter coats, shirts, sweatshirts and boots, bags of candy, bags of food, fresh produce and water. CUMC sets up the room, helps with the distribution of materials, and acts as escorts. They talk with those that are served. They share God’s love.
Lighthouse One of CUMC's main local mission ministry is supporting the Lighthouse Emergency Services which is located approx. 1 mile from CUMC at 6330 Sashabaw Road, Clarkston just south of Waldon. The Lighthouse provides a "Beacon of Hope" for families and individuals struggling to pay rent, utilities, keep food on the table and much more. The first Sunday of the month at CUMC is known as "World Wide" Hunger Sunday and CUMC has a Food Collection every month to support that. In early August to help students suceed in school we collect Backpacks and school supplies for Lighthouse students heading BACK TO SCHOOL. In November, we have our annual Thanksgiving "TAKE A SACK BRING IT BACK" Program (assisted by Angels in Training) where the Angels have labeled Grocery Bags with Food Items and are passed out at the Worship Service the 1st & 2nd Sundays of Nov and are to be returned the 3rd Sunday of Nov... ! www.lighthouseoakland.org
Salvation Army Bell Ringers
CUMC's commitment of time and service ringing the bells will insure that The Salvation Army of North Oakland County will be able to continue to feed the hungry, shelter & clothe the homeless and offer spiritual support to those who are searching. 2010 marked the 24th year that CUMC has rang the bells for the Salvation Army & our 3 day total collection was $5,251,90 at all 3 Krogers in Clarkston. Food Pantry
CUMC's Food Pantry served 52 families with a total of 181 members that utilized the food pantry in 2010. Last year, the food pantry was financially supported by congregational donations, the Clark Trust Account, the Friday morning men’s Bible Study, and the Susanna Wesley Women Circle. For 2011, Mission Candle donations will provide most of the needed support. Joyce Bleim uses donated manufactured coupons, and watches for sale prices, to buy what the food pantry needs. Along with food, our pantry features household items that cannot be met with a family’s bridge card, like laundry detergent and other cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, and baby needs. The food pantry is an essential outreach to families that come to our church needing assistance. Thanks to the efforts of so many, food can always be offered. |
