What CUMC is doing?
While the National organization of the United Methodist Church has had to limit and end many of the operations in Liberia; Clarkston United Methodist Church has heard the call. We have sent many items to help and provide much needed supplies to the area, however, we no plan on sending people. It is the hope of the missions committee to send a group to Liberia in January of 2010. If you are interested in going please contact the Missions Committee. You can also learn more at our Liberian Information Dinner at 6:30pm on Monday, Oct. 20th in the CUMC Fellowship Hall. Come experience Liberian cuisine and learn about the culture of Liberia. Rev. Dr. Charles Boayeu will be speaking on the trip and the needs of his country. Free will offering will be collected.
Cost/What can you do?
While this trip will be of much benefit to our permanent missionaries it will also be a costly trip. Several fund raisers are in the plans. So even if you are not able to go please support those that can. As the time get closer we will also be looking to collect certain supplies.

Background
The United Methodist Church has had a history of serving Liberia programs consisting of a wide range of activities in the areas of agriculture, food security, water and sanitation, education, healthcare, skill training, and transit center management.
Demobilization, Disarmament, Rehabilitation & Reintegration
UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) has provided 770 ex-combatants in Lofa County with training in basic skills that will help them gain employment. The project’s objective was to ensure that ex-combatants acquire marketable skills and basic literacy to enable them to earn sufficient income to support themselves. The program provided skills training in carpentry, masonry, tailoring, and auto mechanics. The former soldiers also gain basic math and literacy skills as well as training in small business. They also receive trauma counseling. In addition, the participants took part in community peace building and reconciliation activities. |
