Plarn Loom Project
Transforming plastic bags into comfort for our neighbors in need
What is Plarn?
Plarn—short for "plastic bag yarn"—is an innovative way to give new life to everyday plastic shopping bags that would otherwise end up in landfills. By cutting and connecting plastic bags into continuous strips, we create a durable, waterproof yarn that can be crocheted or woven into useful items.
At Clarkston UMC, our volunteers have discovered the incredible potential of plarn to create items that provide real comfort and dignity to those experiencing homelessness in our community. What starts as discarded plastic bags becomes a tangible expression of God's love and our commitment to caring for our neighbors.
Plarn Sleeping Mats: Comfort and Dignity
Why Sleeping Mats Matter
Traditional bedding is often impractical—it's heavy, absorbs moisture, and can be difficult to clean and transport. Our plarn sleeping mats offer a superior solution:
- Waterproof Protection: Plarn naturally repels moisture, keeping users dry even on wet ground or in damp conditions.
- Lightweight and Portable: Despite their durability, plarn mats are surprisingly lightweight, making them easy to carry and store.
- Easy to Clean: A simple rinse with water is all that's needed to keep these mats clean and hygienic.
- Durable and Long-lasting: Unlike fabric or cardboard alternatives, plarn mats can withstand regular use and harsh weather conditions.
- Insulation from Cold: The air pockets in the woven plarn provide crucial insulation from cold ground surfaces.

The Impact of Your Gift
Each plarn mat represents approximately 500-700 plastic bags that have been diverted from landfills and transformed into something meaningful. But more importantly, each mat represents hours of prayer, care, and intentional love from our congregation.
When we distribute these mats, we're not just providing a practical item—we're offering dignity, comfort, and a tangible reminder that someone cares.
How You Can Help: Donating Plastic Bags
Perfect for Plarn
- Clean plastic shopping bags (grocery stores, retail stores)
Please Avoid
- Bags with holes or tears
- Biodegradable or compostable bags (they won't hold up)
- Food-contaminated bags
- Bags with strong adhesive residue
How to Prepare Bags for Donation
Follow these simple steps to prepare your plastic bags for the Plarn project. Each prepared bag helps us create more sleeping mats for those in need.
Flatten Your Bag
Start with a clean, dry plastic bag and flatten it completely.

Cut the Bottom
Measure and cut off about 1 inch from the bottom of the bag.

Remove Handles
Cut off the handle end of the bag to create a clean edge.

Create the Loop
Your bag should now form a loop when opened. This is the perfect shape for plarn creation.

Fold and Store
Flatten and fold your prepared bag to bring to Clarkston UMC.

Ready to Donate?
Once you've prepared your bags, you can drop them off at Clarkston UMC during office hours or on Sunday mornings. Thank you for your contribution to this meaningful project!
